The Parliamentary Division of the Federal National Council (FNC) has urged for transformative, ambitious reforms within the United Nations system, emphasizing that the efficacy of these changes should be measured through advancements in peace, security, sustainable development, and humanitarian initiatives rather than cost-cutting measures.

This call was made during the participation of Dr. Marwan Obaid Al Muhairi, representing the FNC Parliamentary Division, at the 151st General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held in Geneva, Switzerland. He took part in discussions under the Committee on United Nations Affairs and the Forum of Young Parliamentarians, highlighting the UAE’s commitment to constructive international engagement.

Speaking at a session titled “The United Nations at 80: An Unprecedented Comprehensive and Ambitious Reform of the UN System,” Al Muhairi highlighted that this milestone anniversary provides a crucial opportunity to boost the organisation’s efficiency, credibility, and capacity to adapt to evolving global challenges. He noted that transparent and inclusive reforms could help strengthen global confidence in the UN, underscoring the key role of parliaments in ensuring national accountability, sustained funding, and the alignment of financial prudence with humanitarian responsibilities.

During another session, “The Process of Electing the United Nations Secretary-General: Mechanisms and Political Foundations,” Al Muhairi reiterated the UAE’s recognition of the UN’s essential role in uniting the world to address cross-border issues and enhance international cooperation. He indicated that the selection of the next UN Secretary-General should be grounded in three core principles: strict adherence to the UN Charter, the capacity for independent leadership and mediation, and a forward-looking vision capable of addressing major global priorities such as climate action, humanitarian relief, and digital transformation.

The UAE Parliamentary Division also presented recommendations to enhance the Secretary-General election process, suggesting the establishment of clear timelines, mandatory publication of vision statements by candidates, greater inclusion of parliamentary and civil society input, and stronger support for competent women leaders through equitable and transparent opportunities.
